Te Whatu Ora’s chief medical officer says help could soon be on the way for understaffed hospitals and primary care.
Dr Andrew Connelly says now immigration settings have changed there is high interest from overseas nurses and other health care workers.
The latest batch of nursing students recently sat their final exams and Counties Manukau is expecting an influx of newly-graduated nurses over the next few weeks.
“It’s tough and it’s going to take a while but I think we’re in a much better position to address this as a whole system rather than individual DHBs. I think we can use our collective strength,” Dr Connelly says.
