$15m to fix Māori boarding school buildings
The final allocations from a $20 million pūtea for Māori boarding schools to upgrade their facilities have been decided.
The funds come out of Te Puni Kokiri’s 2021 budget allocation rather than education, because of the school’s historic role in nurturing Māori leaders.
Māori Development Willie Jackson says the schools have also been staunch advocates of te reo me ngā tikanga Māori, kapa haka, and other aspects of te ao Māori.
He says each school needed significant work to ensure a healthy and safe learning environment in line with current regulations.
St Joseph Māori Girls’ College in Napier gets $6.2 million, Te Aute College gets $5 million, Hukarere Girls’ College gets $981,300 and Hato Pāora near Feilding gets $2.5 million.
