Māori protests given Pacific colonial context
Occupying Ihumaatao and gardening at Parihaka are two of the actions featured in a new book to be launched tomorrow.
Peace Action: Struggles for a decolonised and demilitarised Oceania and East Asia, is edited by Wellington-based activist Valerie Morse.
She says she wanted to share stories of grassroots activity to inspire and inform others.
It includes chapters on protecting Ihuaatao by Pania Newton and Qiane Matata-Sipu, the Doctrine of Discovery by Tina Ngata, the history of Chinese-Māori solidarity, French colonialism in Mā’ohi Nui and Kanaky, Korean peace movements, and Indonesia’s occupation of West Papua.
