Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says she is looking forward to greater diversity and more Maori participation in local government decision-making.
She says with 35 councils establishing Māori wards for this year’s elections the door has been opened for Māori to finally be properly represented at the local government level.
“What we need is for Māori to walk through that door and be the best representative they can be for their communities. Now that will make a difference. It will change the face of local decision-making,” Ms Mahuta says.
