Pressure on hospitals unprecedented

The chief medical officer for Whatu Ora Counties Manukau says the pressure on hospital services is the worst he’s seen in his career, with Middlemore standing room only.
Dr Andrew Coster says the only positive is there is little sign of the RSV respiratory virus which was raging last winter.
High levels of winter ailments and the resurgence of the Covid wave mean not only many in the community are needing hospital care but staff are also getting sick.
“We’re trying to work as smart as we can but nothing about being smart makes up for the fact it’s hard so staff are really under the pump,” Dr Connolly says.
Around the country yesterday there were 729 Covid cases in hospitals.
