Twenty four of the 70 new constables who graduated from Police College in Porirua yesterday were wahine Maori.
Police Minister Chris Hipkins says that’s a record and shows the success of Police efforts to increase diversity so the workforce reflects population demographics.
The addition of wing 355 to the ranks will bring the percentage of wahine Maori to about 3.9 percent, a doubling since 2017 but still well short of the target.
One in four police officers are women.
Mr Hipkins says the total number of new officers since Labour took office is now 3,303.
