The Green Party is backing a bid by Great Barrier iwi Ngāti Rehua, Ngāti Wai ki Aotea to stop Ports of Auckland dumping dredgings from the port in their moana.

Protect Aotea is in the High Court in Auckland this week challenging the Environment Protection Agency’s right to issue a non-notified consent for the dumping of millions of tonnes of waste at a site near Repanga Cuvier Island.
Auckland Central MP Chloe Swarbrick says the concerns of mana whenua have been ignored in the four-year Davis and Goliath battle.
“Members of have our Te Mātāwaka caucus have met with members of mana whenua who are taking Ports of Auckland to court and as the Auckland Central MP I strongly support that,” she says.
