Luxon has new-old recipe for gangs

National Party leader Christopher Luxon says the nature of gangs has changed, so police need new tools to deal with them.
He’s proposing a range of new powers, including banning gang insignia in public places or on social media, dispersal notices to allow police to break up gatherings, non-association orders so known offenders can’t get together to plan crimes, and allowing police to search gang cars or premises for guns.
“What we’re doing here is we’re here to disrupt and dismantle gangs. It’s pretty tough but as we have seen in Australia these kinds of policies have been working really well and the public is feeling safer and more importantly we are putting a stick in the spokes of gangs and that is really important,” Mr Luxon says,
Critics including former National MP and former police officer Chester Borrows say Nationals prescriptions have been tried before and they don’t work.
