Māori values added to world social studies kit

A Spanish researcher at the University of Auckland has helped to include a significant Māori component to a social studies tool kit used by secondary school teachers around the world.
Dr Marta Estelles who has been at the Faculty of Education and Social Work for two years, says the Arts Beyond Borders tool kit helps teach major social issues in a creative and relevant way.
She says Māori creation stories and land issues like Ihumātao have gone into the mix.
“We are going to publish another one in the next couple of weeks called Global citizenship from a Māori Perspective, which explores identity, culture, and can Māori values contribute to the idea of global citizenship, which is a beautiful mahi as well,” Dr Estelles says.
Dr Estelles hopes many Māori teachers will adopt the Arts Beyond Borders kit.
