National Party leader Christopher Luxon says he wants more innovation and devolution in the public sector, not co-governance.
National is threatening to scrap the Māori Health Authority when it is next in Government.
Mr Luxon says National led the way on co-governance in treaty settlements because it has its place in the management of natural resources on a localised basis. Still, he doesn’t want to see it extended to the provision of public services.
“We’re not a fan of creating two systems. We think it’s actually important to have a single system that has massive amounts of innovation and devolution within it so that you can actually deliver outcomes and improve democracies. When you talk about creating a Māori Health Authority, what that’s doing is creating a massive bureaucracy, an amalgamated bureaucracy. It’s not good local iwi on the ground actually delivering it,” he says.
Mr Luxon says the Government is spending a lot of money on more bureaucrats without getting better outcomes.’
