Moon phases fire up exercise routine
Levin sisters Te Rina and Erica Ransfield have come up with a way to exercise by the Māori lunar calendar.
Te Rina, a kura kaupapa teacher and Erica, a personal trainer, say they were inspired to create Mana Marama by the work of astronomer Rangi Mataamua.
Erica says she noticed an immediate difference when she began programming her own exercises in line with maramataka principles.
“For example, Rakaunui is a very high energy moon phase, so I programmed a very high energy workout – timed exercises, minimal rest. Then for other moon phases like Whiro where it is quite low and it requires you to stay home, you’re just going to do a full-body stretch,” Ms Ransfield says.
The 30-day Mana Marama programme is run online through the ericaransfieldfitness.com website.
