Bare bones Waitangi plan for Te Tii Marae

Have your own Waitangi Day commemoration.
That’s the word from Taitokerau Border Control coordinator Reuben Taipari to other iwi as he works on organising next month’s events at Waitangi.
The Waitangi National Trust has scrapped events at the Treaty Grounds, but Ngāpuhi still intends to mark February 6 at the lower Te Tii Marae.
Mr Taipari says it will be smaller, drawing on what Taitokerau has learned over the past two years managing Covid-19.
“In our local communities, in our local areas, we can manage it. Where it becomes wider and the rest of the motu wants to come, that is definitely a problem. While we’re not saying they can’t come we’re persuading them to think about different ways of celebrating Waitangi in their areas,” he says.
Waitangi Marae won’t get the usual level of support this year from police and other agencies.
