Protestors share personal stories
Members of Ngā Tamatoa will share their personal stories and experiences as part of the group’s 50th-anniversary reunion in Tauranga Moana this weekend.
Rangatahi formed the protest movement in the early 1970s to fight racism and confront injustice.
Four-panel discussions on various kaupapa will be held at the local campus of the University of Waikato tomorrow afternoon.
The first – ‘Ngā Tamatoa, The Beginning’ – will feature Toro Waaka, Taura Eruera, John Ohia, Linda Tuhiwai Smith and Brya Taylor.
Tame Iti, Larry Parr, Rīpeka Evans and Donna Awatere will present the second panel, ‘The Treaty is a Fraud’.
‘From Protest to Social Action’ will feature Orewa Barrett-Ohia, Kura Te Waru-Rewiri, Josie Keelan, Hone Harawira and Ngahuia Te Awekotuku.
The line-up of the fourth and final panel, ‘The Petition’, includes Rāmari Te Hemara Maipi, Taitimu Maipi, Mana Cracknel, Hilda Harawira and Toro Waaka.
