Mainstream creams off Māori pūtea
The Minister for Family and Sexual Violence is backing a call from Waipareira head John Tamihere for money for Māori programmes to go to Māori organisations.
Mr Tamihere has slammed the way resources for Covid vaccinations have been allocated, and says in too many areas Māori providers are last in the queue despite being far more effective at delivering services to their people.
Greens Co-leader Marama Davidson says the problem is not just with the Covid and primary health response.
“For far too long and including in the family and sexual violence sector, non-Māori organisations have been receiving the funding and support for dealing with and working with a base that is predominantly wāhine Māori and predominantly Māori. That does need to stop,” she says.
Marama Davidson says the latest figures from the Hokinaga show the effectiveness of Māori providers, with non-Māori rather than Māori who are now under-vaccinated.
