Hinerangi Raumati-Tu’ua from Ngāti Mutunga and Waikato has been appointed chair of pan-Māori-owned fishing company Moana New Zealand.

She replaces Whaimutu Dewes, who has served nine years on the board.

Ms Raumati-Tu’ua has been a director of Moana, previously known as Aotearoa Fisheries, since 2012 and was previously a director of Te Ohu Kaimoana, the Māori fisheries settlement trust.

She also chairs Paraninihi ki Waitotara Incorporation and is a director of Port Nicholson Fisheries, Sealord Group, Watercare Services, Taranaki Iwi Holdings and Tainui Group Holdings.

She says it has been a challenging year for most of the fishing sector because of COVID-19 but the strength for Māori is kōtahitanga, achieving scale by collectivising their natural resources, people and vision.
