Ten wahine Māori have been selected for Aotearoa's first Māori adornment programme.

The Toi Māori Aotearoa-backed Whakakai mentorship programme will be led by Taranaki-based bone carver and tā moko artist Rangi Kipa.

They will receive a short course on the design and production of traditional Māori clothing and jewellery which will give them a foundation for their own artistic practice.

"Ultimately over a number of years we would like to create a cohort of wāhine focusing on the sculptural, and whether they go into actual whakairo per se or just dealing with 3D form, we will end up having a cohort that can support each other in pursuing their own aspirations," Kipa says.
