Ngāi Tahu Tourism has appointed Heaven-Lee Kaka as its 2019 Te Pia Tāpoi scholarship recipient.

Originally from Tamaki Makaurau, Heaven-Lee is in her second year of studying Tourism Management at the Auckland University of Technology.

The scholarship was open to Ngāi Tahu students and includes study fee support, paid holiday work and opportunities to grow cultural skills and learn more about the Ngāi Tahu iwi.

It is the third year that Ngāi Tahu Tourism has run the scholarship.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism Chief Executive Quinton Hall says, “It’s our aim to encourage more Ngāi Tahu to embark on a career in tourism and this scholarship is just one of the things we’re doing to have more iwi members working with us.”

Mr Hall says a number of strong candidates applied for the scholarship and the company was pleased to have Heaven-Lee join the team.

Heaven-Lee says she is looking forward to connecting with her iwi. “Of course the financial support will assist me a lot with my studies, but this scholarship will give me the chance to connect with Ngāi Tahu and learn about my iwi, and hopefully be able to give back.”

The scholarship includes up to $6,000 towards course fees per year for three years and paid holiday work in either Queenstown, Franz Josef or Rotorua.

Air New Zealand Tandem Travel kindly granted $3,000 towards the first year of Heaven-Lee’s scholarship.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of Tandem Travel, one of our external providers, for this scholarship initiative,” Mr Hall says.
