Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis would like to see more light and less heat at hui to discuss Ngāpuhi’s treaty settlement.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little held six hui in the north at the weekend to hear reaction to new proposals to get settlement talks restarted.

Mr Davis attended the hui in Kaikohe and Hokianga, and says Mr Little made it clear the Government was not there to tell people what to do.

"In some ways I felt really sorry for Andrew because there was a lot of silly talk, a lot of accusations the Government was coming in and bulldozing Ngāpuhi. Andrew just kept repeating, 'look, you people are the ones who will decide how this goes forward.' Sometimes I wish our people will stop and listen to the person who spoke before them and start thinking before they speak because at times they can be quite irrational," he says.

Andrew Little is set to hold hui with Ngāpuhi people in Tāmaki Mākaurau this weekend and in Wellington the weekend after.
