Maori trades training in Labour package
Labour is promising to fund an additional 2000 Maori trades training places as part of its $183 million package to ensure all New Zealanders under the age of 20 are in work or training.
Employment, skills and training spokesperson Grant Robertson says more than 10 percent of youngsters aged 15 to 24 are not in work, education or training.
He says Labour is targeting the under 20s because at that age young people make critical decisions about their careers which can determine their pathway in life.
As well as extra training places for Maori and Pasifika youth, it will create 12,000 apprenticeship places over four years.
Employment Minister Steven Joyce says Labour’s policy is pretty much a copy of what’s already happening with a higher price tag.
