Rangatira from around the motu have been included on a new council to advise the Maori king.

Kingitanga spokesperson says Tekau-ma-rua went into recess after the death of Henare Tuwhangai almost 30 years ago.

He says when King Tuheitia decided it should be revived, he decided it should bring a national perspective on questions of Maori development rather than be made up solely of Tainui kaumatua.

Mr Papa says the members chosen at a weekend hui at Ngaruawahia are familiar figures at every national hui.

He says they are known as people of knowledge and wisdom and as mangai for their own iwi.

The chair is Hemana Manuera of Ngati Awa.

Other members include Pou Temara of Ngai Tuhoe, Che Wilson of Ngati Rangi, Te Kahautu Maxwell from Whakatohea, Te Arawa leader Sir Toby Curtis, Kihi Ngatai from Ngaiterangi and Ngati Ranginui, Mereiwa Broughton of Taranaki, Erima Henare of Ngapuhi and former Maori Women's Welfare League president June Mariu of Te Whanau a Apanui.

The New Zealand Maori Council, Te Kohanga Reo and Maori Women's Welfare League will each appoint a member of the Twelve.
