Toni Huata, a revered figure in Māori music and te reo, has passed away. She served as the director of Māori music at the SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music. Her family has announced a service to be held at Pipitea Marae in Wellington on Tuesday, February 11.

Toni Huata passed away early yesterday morning and will lie at Pipitea Marae this morning before returning home to Te Matau-a-Māui, where she will be at the marae at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu.

Taonga pūoro set scene for waiata Māori series
The director of Māori music at SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music says a new series premiering tonight is a great way for tamariki mokopuna and others to understand the evolution of contemporary waiata Māori.
- Radio Waatea is Auckland's only Māori radio station that provides an extensive bi-lingual broadcast to its listeners. Based at Nga Whare Waatea marae in Mangere, it is located in the middle of the biggest Māori population in Aotearoa.
