In a partnership with Ngāti Tūwharetoa Geothermal, Kawerau mill owner Essity and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority are investing $20 million into converting the mill's paper dryers from natural gas to geothermal heat.

Global hygiene and health company Essity Essity’s Kawerau mill is the only paper manufacturer and converter of toilet tissue and paper towels in New Zealand pumping out around 55,000 tonnes of paper products a year. It has now invested $20 million to decarbonise its paper production by using renewable geothermal steam from supplier, Ngāti Tūwharetoa Geothermal.
