Smelter money used to restore lagoon

With the future of the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter still dependent on the negotiation of a new electricity supply contract, owner Rio Tinto is shoring up its relationship with tangata whenua in Murihiku.

In 2022 an MOU was signed between Murihiku Rūnaka, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited (NZAS) and Rio Tinto Aluminium Limited to work together on restoring the whenua at the Tiwai Peninsula
