Mourners have been making their way to Karetu Marae near Kawakawa for the tangi of esteemed Ngāti Manu identity Panapa (Pat) Davis.
Mr Davis is the father of former Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis, police senior sergeant Patrick Davis, district court judge Greg Davis and teacher Sonya Davis-Brooking.
He and wife Glenys received Queens Service Medals in 2019 for services to the community.
Labour MP Peeni Henare says coming on the heels of the death of All Black legend Sid Going, it feels like a double blow for the north.
“Panapa Davis or Uncle Pat as he was affectionately known, for anyone who went though Kawakawa and stopped at the (Bonanza) tearooms, it was Uncle Pat and Auntie Glenys who ran that, well known figure around the mid-north so we farewell them, Super Sid and Uncle Pat,” he says.
