The Justice Select Committee is inviting public submissions on the Treaty Principles Bill, with a deadline of Tuesday, 7 January 2025.
The bill, which seeks to enshrine Treaty principles in legislation, drew over 40,000 protesters to Parliament’s steps yesterday.
The committee acknowledges the bill’s controversial nature and aims to encourage respectful debate.
Hearings are expected to conclude by late February 2025, with submission criteria—such as disallowing offensive language—to be confirmed soon.
Submissions can be made via Parliament’s website or by post, in English or te reo Māori. Submissions in te reo will be translated, though this may take additional time.
A referendum will be required for the bill to become law, reflecting its importance in New Zealand’s constitutional framework.
