The Prime Minister cannot confirm if National’s coalition partners will support plans to break up the supermarket duopoly.
The government has issued a Request for Information to explore changes that could allow a third grocery store to enter the market.
Woolworths and Foodstuffs dominate, and breaking them up is under consideration.
When asked if National could gain ACT leader David Seymour’s support to sell off supermarkets, Christopher Luxon told RNZ that he would “worry about that down the road.”
He added that discussions with Seymour have occurred, but the government will conduct the necessary reviews first.
