More than 500 schools have joined the resistance to the Government’s announced changes to the Education Act that would see the expunging of Te Tiriti of Waitangi as something Boards of Trustees need to be conscious of in terms of governing their schools. To date more than 500 schools, in a very public way, have said they will be declining to implement the directive – thereby undermining the Minister of Education. Nelson College was very blunt, stating, “There is no going back for Nelson College”. Meanwhile, the Finance Minister Nicola Willis had this to say: “Your Treaty of Waitangi clause may have been a virtue signal that made you feel good, but it made not an iota of difference for the kids whose learning we’re focused on.” Former Education Minister Jan Tinetti joins me now.
