The Green Party has released costings for its 2026 transport programme, committing $4.125 billion over the next four years to public transport, rail and lower fares across Aotearoa.
The package includes $75 million for new electric buses, $830 million to remove Auckland level crossings and $300 million for metropolitan rail renewals in Wellington.
A further $410 million has been allocated to restoring the Southerner Connection, alongside $110 million for new sleeper trains between Wellington and Auckland.
The Greens are also proposing $1.2 billion for inter-regional buses and public transport improvements in cities and towns, funded through reallocations within the National Land Transport Fund.
Another $1.2 billion would fund free public transport for concession groups and $2 adult fares, with the party saying that component would be paid for through its tax programme.
The Greens say longer-term project costings have also been released to demonstrate how rapid transit and rail investment could be funded over the coming decade. Major new infrastructure projects costing more than $50 million would still be subject to the Infrastructure Commission’s investment assurance process before funding was committed.
The announcement adds further detail to the Greens’ transport platform as infrastructure, congestion and the cost of getting around become key issues in the 2026 election campaign.
