The Green Party is challenging the National-led Government over its climate policies after an official complaint was lodged with the European Union alleging New Zealand has breached commitments contained in the EU–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.

Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick says the Government needs to explain its climate record rather than blaming others for concerns being raised internationally. The complaint was lodged by a European organisation and relates to the Government’s climate policy decisions and their compatibility with the trade agreement.

The political dispute intensified after Trade Minister Todd McClay attributed the complaint to the Greens. According to the Green Party, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon subsequently walked back that allegation, while raising concerns about the role of media reporting.

Swarbrick says her party has repeatedly challenged the Government over changes to climate policy through Parliament, Official Information Act requests and independent advice. She argues weakening climate commitments could have consequences extending beyond emissions policy to trade and market access.

The Greens are positioning climate policy as an economic as well as environmental issue heading into the election, linking emissions reduction with jobs, household costs, resilience and maintaining access to international export markets. These are Green Party claims made during the election campaign rather than independent findings.

The dispute puts New Zealand’s international climate commitments and their potential relationship with trade agreements back into the political spotlight as campaigning for the 2026 General Election continues.
