A third case of highly pathogenic H5 bird flu has been confirmed in New Zealand, with testing detecting the virus in a northern giant petrel found dead on a remote Wairarapa beach.

The Ministry for Primary Industries says the northern giant petrel discovered at Cape Palliser tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, clade 2.3.4.4b, the strain of highly pathogenic bird flu that has spread extensively through wild bird populations internationally.

The latest discovery means New Zealand has now recorded three confirmed H5 bird flu detections, all involving individual wild birds in the Wellington region.

There have been no detections in commercial poultry and no mass wild-bird mortality events associated with the virus in New Zealand.

MPI says the risk to human health remains low and chicken and eggs remain safe to eat.

Third detection in New Zealand

The northern giant petrel was discovered by a Department of Conservation ranger, who reported it through MPI’s exotic pest and disease system.

Samples from the bird were received by MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory on 14 August.

Initial testing detected only a low level of influenza virus, meaning several rounds of additional testing were required before H5 bird flu could be confirmed.

MPI says the additional testing was considered important because northern giant petrels are among the species known to be affected by avian influenza.

As ocean-going birds, petrels can travel enormous distances and arrive on New Zealand coastlines, particularly during poor weather.

Authorities say the latest detection is therefore not unexpected and further individual cases in wild birds are anticipated.

Precautionary checks at Cape Palliser

There were no signs of wider problems around the location where the petrel was discovered, but officials are carrying out precautionary checks along the remote Cape Palliser coastline.

That will be important in determining whether the latest case remains an isolated detection or whether other affected birds are present in the area.

New Zealand’s geographic isolation provided the country with significant protection during earlier stages of the international H5N1 outbreak, but the arrival of infected migratory and ocean-going birds has long been regarded as a potential pathway for the virus to reach these shores.

The confirmation of three individual cases means surveillance is now particularly important for understanding where the virus is appearing and whether it begins spreading more widely among wild bird populations.

Native wildlife remains a major concern

While much of the international discussion around bird flu has focused on commercial poultry, the implications for Aotearoa’s native wildlife are also significant.

New Zealand is home to globally important populations of seabirds and other native species, including threatened and endangered manu that may be particularly vulnerable if H5N1 becomes established or causes outbreaks within breeding colonies.

MPI says it is working alongside DOC to track the movement of the virus and support efforts to protect native wildlife.

That surveillance also provides critical information for conservation teams responsible for vulnerable species and breeding sites.

The discovery of infected ocean-going birds demonstrates why the threat cannot be considered solely an agricultural biosecurity issue.

It is also potentially a conservation and biodiversity challenge.

Poultry industry remains clear

For New Zealand’s poultry and egg producers, the critical news remains that H5N1 has not been detected in poultry.

MPI says it will continue providing one-on-one support and advice to poultry and egg operations throughout Wellington and the Wairarapa.

Understanding where infected wild birds are appearing allows producers to make informed decisions about biosecurity measures designed to reduce opportunities for wild birds to come into contact with commercial flocks.

Preventing transmission into poultry remains a major priority because international experience has shown how quickly highly pathogenic avian influenza can spread once introduced into susceptible farmed bird populations.

An outbreak could have significant animal-welfare and economic consequences and require substantial disease-control measures.

Public reports helping surveillance

MPI says members of the public have responded strongly since New Zealand’s first H5 bird flu detections, reporting groups of sick or dead birds for assessment.

Not every dead bird will require H5N1 testing.

Experts assess notifications using internationally recognised risk criteria, with priority given to multiple sick or dead birds, seabirds, waterfowl, species gathering in large groups and detections in locations considered particularly significant.

Those reports are helping authorities build a more detailed picture of how the virus may be moving through New Zealand’s wild bird populations.

Don’t touch sick or dead birds

The message to the public remains straightforward.

Anyone finding three or more sick or dead wild birds together should report them immediately to MPI’s exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66 or through MPI’s online reporting service.

People should not handle or move the birds.

The discovery at Cape Palliser does not mean there is currently a widespread outbreak in New Zealand, and there is no evidence of infection within the country’s poultry industry.

But three confirmed detections now demonstrate that H5N1 has reached Aotearoa’s wild birds.

That means the next phase will be about vigilance — protecting poultry, watching vulnerable native manu and detecting any signs that isolated cases are becoming something more serious.
