Former Māori Women’s Welfare League President Prue Kapua has shared a deeply personal reflection on her life, leadership and the future of Te Ao Māori in a wide-ranging interview with veteran broadcaster Dale Husband on Radio Waatea’s He Rerehua.

The conversation traces Kapua’s journey from her early years through a distinguished career in law, governance and public service, culminating in her eight-year tenure as National President of the Māori Women’s Welfare League between 2014 and 2022. Throughout that time, she helped lead one of Aotearoa’s longest-standing Māori organisations during a period of significant social and political change.

The interview explores the milestones that have shaped Kapua’s career, her commitment to advancing the aspirations of wāhine Māori, and the importance of strong leadership grounded in tikanga, whānau and service. It also reflects on the continuing role of Māori institutions in responding to the challenges facing communities across Aotearoa.

Looking beyond her own journey, Kapua discusses the current state of Te Ao Māori, examining the opportunities and pressures confronting Māori today. Topics include the protection of te reo Māori, the strength of Māori leadership, constitutional issues, and the need to ensure future generations inherit thriving communities and enduring cultural identity.

Now serving in a range of national governance roles, including as a member of the Waitangi Tribunal and trustee of Māori Women’s Development Inc, Kapua continues to contribute to kaupapa focused on Māori legal rights, health, education and social wellbeing.

The He Rerehua interview offers listeners an opportunity to hear from one of Te Ao Māori’s most experienced leaders as she reflects on a lifetime of service and shares her perspective on where Māori are heading in the years ahead.
