A new bilingual children’s book celebrating the treasured maunga of Tāmaki Makaurau has been released in time for Matariki, giving tamariki and whānau an opportunity to deepen their connection to whenua, te reo Māori and the stories that shape Auckland.

Ngā Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau | The Maunga of Tāmaki Makaurau, published by Auckland Council Libraries, is a beautifully illustrated flip book presented in both te reo Māori and English. Designed to support language learning across generations, the publication encourages readers to explore the cultural significance of Auckland’s volcanic landscapes while fostering a greater sense of kaitiakitanga and care for te taiao.

The book tells the story of the city’s iconic maunga through a Māori worldview, celebrating oral storytelling traditions and highlighting the enduring relationship between people, place and whakapapa. It aims to inspire young readers to become future guardians of the environment while strengthening cultural identity and understanding.

The publication has been co-written by mana whenua mother-and-daughter team Michelle Wilson of Hauraki iwi affiliations including Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Tamaterā and Ngāti Maru, alongside Tia Saofia, who shares the same whakapapa connections. The book has been translated by Tāne Karamaina and features vibrant illustrations created by Saofia, whose contemporary digital artwork blends modern design with Māori storytelling and themes of identity, hope and spiritual connection.

Wilson is recognised for her work promoting te reo Māori, whakapapa and environmental stewardship, while Saofia brings a fresh visual approach that connects younger audiences with traditional narratives.

Auckland Council says the publication reflects the important role libraries play in preserving local stories, supporting language revitalisation and ensuring future generations can connect with the unique history and identity of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The timing of the release also aligns with Matariki, a period that encourages reflection, remembrance and renewal, making the book a fitting resource for whānau seeking to strengthen their understanding of Māori culture and the natural environment.

The publication forms part of Auckland Council Libraries’ wider publishing programme, which focuses on filling gaps in library collections by producing resources that reflect the diversity of Auckland communities, amplify underrepresented voices and preserve local stories for generations to come.

Ngā Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau | The Maunga of Tāmaki Makaurau is available to borrow through Auckland Council Libraries and can also be purchased from participating bookstores with a recommended retail price of $25.
