Radio Waatea wishes to clarify and correct aspects of an earlier story regarding Juken New Zealand’s operations in Kaitāia.
Juken New Zealand has confirmed that no final decision has been made regarding the future of its Northland Mill. The company has commenced a formal consultation process with employees on a proposal to close the mill, citing challenging market conditions, falling demand in key markets, rising operating costs and insufficient work to sustain ongoing operations.
The company says it has undertaken extensive efforts to identify a buyer or alternative pathway that would allow the Northland Mill to continue operating. However, those efforts have not resulted in a viable option at this stage.
Importantly, Juken New Zealand has confirmed that its Triboard operation is not affected by the current proposal. The company says the process of exploring a potential sale of the Triboard site as a going concern remains ongoing.
Juken New Zealand says it is committed to a thorough consultation process and is currently seeking feedback from employees and union representatives before any final determination is made.
The company has also acknowledged the uncertainty facing workers and their whānau and says support services are being made available throughout the consultation period.
Radio Waatea regrets any confusion caused by the earlier report and notes that the situation remains subject to consultation, with no final decisions yet announced regarding the proposed closure of the Northland Mill.
We will continue to follow developments as they occur.
