Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews have been kept busy responding to a series of vegetation fires across Canterbury, with strong winds and dry conditions contributing to challenging firefighting conditions.

The latest update from Fire and Emergency confirmed multiple incidents were reported throughout the region, with most involving vegetation fires. One of the more significant incidents occurred on Selwyn Road near Rolleston, where a fire involving a farm shed and surrounding trees prompted a major response. At its peak, 16 crews were deployed to the scene, with 10 crews continuing to work on the fire into the evening.

Authorities say firefighters have worked hard to contain the outbreaks and prevent them from spreading to nearby properties and infrastructure.

The incidents come as fire danger levels remain elevated across parts of Canterbury. Fire weather experts warn that strong winds can rapidly turn small fires into major emergencies, making containment difficult and increasing risks to both firefighters and communities.

Fire and Emergency is urging residents to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire. Landowners are being encouraged to check old burn piles, ensure ashes are fully extinguished and avoid lighting fires during windy conditions.

The latest fires highlight the ongoing challenges facing emergency services as changing weather patterns and dry conditions increase fire risks across rural New Zealand.

Communities throughout Canterbury are being asked to remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to emergency services.

Fire investigators are expected to examine several of the incidents to determine their causes.

Authorities say public cooperation remains critical in preventing avoidable fires and reducing pressure on emergency crews already responding across the region.
