For many aspiring café owners, restaurateurs and food truck operators, the dream of running a successful hospitality business often begins with great food, strong coffee and a passion for serving customers.

But turning that dream into reality can quickly become complicated when faced with licences, permits, registrations and compliance requirements.

To help simplify the process, Auckland Council has launched Hospo Hub, a free online service designed to guide hospitality businesses through the often complex world of council regulations and approvals.

The initiative brings together information on food registration, alcohol licensing, outdoor dining permits, verification requirements and other regulatory obligations in one central location.

Since launching in March, the service has already attracted more than 200 enquiries from hospitality operators seeking advice and support.

Hospo Hub was developed following discussions at the Mayor’s Tourism and Hospitality Forum, where industry representatives highlighted concerns about regulatory complexity and the challenges facing new and existing hospitality businesses.

Feedback from business owners identified a need for clearer guidance, easier access to information and better support when navigating council processes.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says the initiative is part of broader efforts to support local businesses and reduce unnecessary barriers to success.

The goal is to provide hospitality operators with a clear entry point into council systems, helping them obtain the right information early and avoid costly delays.

Auckland Council General Manager of Licensing and Compliance Rob Irvine says many business owners are engaging with council requirements for the first time and can find the process overwhelming.

Rather than having to determine which department to contact or which approvals may be required, operators can use Hospo Hub as a central access point and receive guidance tailored to their situation.

The service is available to people opening new hospitality businesses, purchasing existing operations, or making significant changes to their current business model.

Recognising Auckland’s diverse hospitality sector, information is available in multiple languages, including English, Korean, Japanese and Mandarin.

The hospitality industry continues to play a vital role in Auckland’s economy, supporting jobs, tourism and local communities. Industry leaders say reducing administrative barriers can help businesses focus more on serving customers and growing sustainable operations.

As hospitality operators continue to navigate economic pressures and changing consumer behaviour, initiatives like Hospo Hub aim to make the path to business ownership more straightforward and accessible.

Council officials hope the service will not only reduce confusion but also encourage more entrepreneurs to pursue their hospitality ambitions with confidence.
