A $50 million Budget 2026 boost for the Awakino Gorge is being welcomed as long overdue investment in one of the North Island’s most important and vulnerable transport corridors.
The funding will support work on State Highway 3 through the Awakino Gorge, a key connection between Taranaki, the King Country, Waikato, and the wider upper North Island.
Local leaders have been calling for urgent action after repeated slips, rockfalls, closures, and weather-related disruptions exposed the fragility of the route.
The Awakino Gorge is used daily by freight operators, local residents, farmers, tourism operators, emergency services, and regional businesses. Between 2500 and 4000 vehicles are estimated to travel the route each day, with heavy trucks making up a significant share of traffic.
When the gorge closes, the impact is felt well beyond the road itself. Freight is delayed, businesses face higher costs, communities become isolated, and drivers are forced onto lengthy detours.
Mayors and regional leaders have argued for years that the route needs a more resilient long-term solution, particularly as severe weather events become more frequent and costly.
The $50 million Budget allocation is expected to support safety and resilience improvements, helping reduce disruption and strengthen a highway that is vital for regional productivity.
The investment follows other major work on State Highway 3, including improvements around the Awakino Tunnel and the wider Mt Messenger project further south.
Local leaders say the Awakino Gorge has remained a weak point in the network despite its importance to regional trade and everyday travel.
For Māori communities, rural whānau, and small towns across the region, reliable roads are essential for access to work, schools, health services, marae, farms, markets, and whānau connections.
The funding also comes as Budget 2026 continues to face scrutiny over where the Government is choosing to invest. While some critics argue the Budget is too focused on roads, supporters say regional transport resilience is critical for communities that depend on safe and reliable connections.
Attention will now turn to how quickly the money can be turned into practical work on the ground, and whether it will be enough to deliver lasting resilience for a route that has been vulnerable for generations.
For local communities, the message is clear: the Awakino Gorge is not just a stretch of road — it is a regional lifeline.
