A major step forward has been reached in the construction of a new purpose-built mental health facility in Waikato, aimed at improving care for people experiencing acute distress.

The Adult Acute Inpatient Facility is now weather tight, allowing interior work to begin as the project moves closer to completion. The milestone signals progress toward delivering a modern, therapeutic environment designed to support recovery, dignity and wellbeing.

The $131.2 million development will span 8,000 square metres and include 64 single inpatient rooms. Once operational, it is expected to support around 500,000 people over its lifetime, significantly boosting mental health service capacity in the region.

Health leaders say the facility will play a key role in easing pressure across the wider system, particularly emergency departments, by ensuring people can access appropriate inpatient care when they need it most.

The design has been shaped through input from clinicians, people with lived experience, mana whenua and community partners, with a strong focus on cultural safety, privacy and improved outcomes for tangata whaiora.

Features such as larger rooms, natural light and access to outdoor courtyards are intended to create a calmer, more therapeutic space, helping people stabilise sooner and supporting recovery during periods of acute need.

Officials say reaching the weather-tight stage keeps the project on track, with interior fit-out now underway.

The facility forms part of broader mental health investment in Waikato, aimed at improving patient flow, reducing overcrowding and delivering faster access to specialist care.

Construction is continuing, with the new Adult Acute Inpatient Facility expected to open in late December this year.
