A respected Northland educator has been recognised for decades of service, as growing economic pressures continue to impact whānau and school communities across Te Tai Tokerau.

Whangārei principal Pat Newman has been awarded an MNZM for his contributions to education, highlighting a career focused on supporting tamariki, particularly those facing high needs and trauma. As principal of Hora Hora School, Newman has led initiatives grounded in kaupapa Māori, while also establishing a trust providing early childhood education and daily counselling support for vulnerable children.

His work extends beyond the classroom, with leadership roles across the education sector, including the Māori Achievement Collaborative and Te Tai Tokerau Principals Association, as well as governance involvement supporting whānau wellbeing services.

However, recognition of his service comes at a time when many families in the Hora Hora community are under increasing strain. Rising living costs and fuel prices are placing pressure on household budgets, with schools seeing the effects play out in attendance and engagement.

Educators say financial hardship can impact whether tamariki are able to get to school consistently, as transport costs and competing priorities weigh heavily on whānau. In some cases, families are making difficult decisions about daily expenses, which can have flow-on effects for children’s learning and wellbeing.

School leaders are continuing to respond with wraparound support, recognising that education cannot be separated from the broader realities facing communities. Initiatives focused on wellbeing, food support, and connection to services are becoming increasingly important in helping tamariki stay engaged.

Newman’s long-standing commitment to supporting vulnerable learners reflects a wider effort across Northland schools to meet these challenges head-on, combining education with care, cultural connection, and community leadership.

As cost pressures persist, the role of schools as hubs of support for whānau is becoming more critical than ever.
