Severe weather that swept through the Hutt Valley has left parts of the region flooded and residents shaken, with Mayor Ken Laban acknowledging the scale and intensity of the event caught many off guard.

Heavy rain triggered widespread surface flooding, inundating roads, properties and low-lying areas across Lower Hutt and surrounding communities. Emergency services were kept busy responding to calls as water levels rose rapidly during the peak of the storm.

Mayor Laban says the suddenness of the downpour and its intensity were greater than expected, with early forecasts not fully indicating how severe conditions would become. The weather system quickly escalated, overwhelming drainage in some areas and creating hazardous conditions for motorists and residents.

Council teams and emergency crews moved swiftly to assess damage, clear debris and restore access where possible. Welfare support has also been made available for affected households as recovery efforts begin.

The event has renewed focus on infrastructure resilience and preparedness, particularly as extreme weather becomes more frequent. Local authorities are expected to review response systems and stormwater capacity following the flooding.

Residents are being urged to remain cautious, avoid flooded areas, and report any ongoing issues as clean-up operations continue across the valley.
