A formal complaint has been lodged with the Ombudsman over the Government’s refusal to release key modelling behind its proposed liquefied natural gas import project.

Lawyers for Climate Action say the complaint centres on the Government’s failure to make public a report prepared by consultants, which informed its decision to pursue an LNG import terminal. The group argues that despite earlier assurances the modelling would be released, it has yet to be made available.

The proposed LNG facility, expected to be developed in Taranaki within the next few years, is being positioned by the Government as a way to strengthen energy security and stabilise electricity prices.

However, critics say transparency is critical, particularly given the scale and long-term implications of the project. Concerns have been raised about whether the economic case for LNG has been properly tested against alternative energy options, including renewable solutions.

The complaint focuses on what is described as a lack of openness around the analysis used to justify the project. It also questions whether the modelling has undergone independent scrutiny or robust comparison with other energy pathways.

Legal advocates say access to the information is essential for public accountability, especially as the project could involve significant public cost and potential environmental impacts.

The Ombudsman has the authority to investigate complaints relating to the withholding of official information and assess whether agencies have complied with transparency obligations.

The issue adds to growing debate around the Government’s energy strategy, with LNG proposals drawing both support for improving reliability and criticism over climate impacts and reliance on fossil fuels.

Calls are continuing for full disclosure of the modelling so the public can better understand the risks, costs, and alternatives associated with the project.
