A new Retirement Commissioner has been appointed, marking a significant leadership change for the agency responsible for improving financial wellbeing and retirement outcomes in Aotearoa.

The appointment comes as current Commissioner Jane Wrightson prepares to step down in early 2026 after nearly six years in the role, having confirmed she would not seek another term.

The Retirement Commissioner is a key public sector role, tasked with advising the Government on retirement income policy, promoting financial capability, and overseeing issues such as retirement villages and long-term savings strategies.

The incoming Commissioner will take over leadership of Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission, a Crown entity that plays a central role in shaping how New Zealanders prepare for retirement and manage their financial futures.

The position also includes responsibility for leading national strategies to improve financial literacy, as well as regularly reviewing retirement income policies and reporting back to the Government.

The change in leadership comes at a time of ongoing debate around retirement savings, KiwiSaver settings, and the sustainability of superannuation, with the Commission continuing to play a critical advisory role in these discussions.

The new Commissioner is expected to guide the next phase of work aimed at strengthening financial resilience for individuals, whānau, and communities across the country.
