Greens MP, Huhana Lyndon, was in Te Tai Tokerau checking on whānau and kaumātua in the wake of Cyclone Vaianu, describing a region shaken but standing strong.

During her time in the north, Lyndon found many communities doing their best to support one another despite difficult conditions. Whānau had mobilised quickly, ensuring kaumātua were safe, sheltered, and had access to essentials as the cyclone swept through.

The main concerns centred on isolation, power outages, and access to basic services. In some rural areas, damaged roads and fallen trees made it difficult to reach vulnerable residents, while communication disruptions added to the uncertainty.

Reports of damage are continuing to come in, with properties affected by flooding, slips, and wind damage. Infrastructure has taken a hit in several parts of the region, particularly in low-lying and coastal communities where the impact of heavy rain and strong winds was most severe.

Despite the challenges, there has been a strong sense of collective responsibility, with hapū and community networks stepping in to fill gaps and provide immediate support where needed.

Looking ahead, the focus is shifting to recovery and ensuring resources reach those most affected. There is also a growing call for improved resilience in the face of increasingly frequent severe weather events, particularly for remote communities that are often the hardest hit.

Lyndon underscores the importance of staying connected and prepared, as Northland begins the work of rebuilding and strengthening its response for the future.
