#regional: Fuel Theft Investigation Raises Concerns Amid Rising Diesel Demand
Police are investigating the theft of a significant amount of diesel from a business in Marton, in what authorities say is part of a growing trend of fuel-related crime across Aotearoa.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, when approximately 3,000 litres of diesel was taken from an on-site storage tank at a commercial property east of Whanganui.
Police say two individuals arrived at the site in a light-coloured truck and were seen transferring fuel into a trailer, fuel pod, and containers before leaving the area. The theft is believed to have taken place within a short window of time, between around 4:20am and 4:50am.
Authorities have indicated that those involved attempted to conceal their identities, and enquiries are ongoing to identify both the suspects and the vehicle used.
The incident comes amid increasing concern from Police about a rise in diesel thefts nationwide. Recent updates suggest fuel is becoming a more common target, particularly in rural and industrial areas where large volumes are stored onsite.
Diesel is a critical resource for sectors such as agriculture, transport, and construction, making it both valuable and vulnerable-especially during periods of high prices and supply pressure.
For businesses, particularly those operating in rural regions like Rangitīkei, fuel theft can have immediate and costly consequences.
Losing thousands of litres of diesel can disrupt operations, delay work, and create additional financial strain at a time when fuel costs are already elevated.
The incident highlights the risks faced by businesses storing fuel onsite, with security measures becoming increasingly important as thefts become more sophisticated.
Police are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with information that could assist to come forward. This includes people who may have seen suspicious activity, vehicles, or movements in the Marton area during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
As fuel theft incidents continue to emerge, authorities are reminding businesses and communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.
