#national: ENERGY CRISIS SPARKS CALL FOR SOVEREIGNTY SHIFT
Te Pāti Māori is urging immediate action on energy sovereignty, warning every household in Aotearoa is paying the price for continued reliance on imported fossil fuels.
The party says the current global instability has exposed just how vulnerable the country remains to overseas conflicts and market shocks, with rising fuel costs flowing through to groceries, transport and everyday living expenses.
Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says the scale of money leaving the country highlights the urgency, with tens of millions of dollars being spent offshore every day to secure fossil fuel supplies.
Te Pāti Māori is calling for a major investment in local energy infrastructure, arguing long-term relief will only come from generating power domestically rather than relying on temporary measures such as fuel tax cuts.
The proposal includes a nationwide push to electrify homes and communities, alongside large-scale support for rooftop solar and battery systems. It also backs paying households for the energy they generate and developing community-based microgrids, particularly in rural areas and on marae.
The party says aligning energy, transport and housing policy into a single national strategy would help reduce costs, boost resilience and keep more money circulating within the local economy.
It is also calling for cross-party support, framing the issue as one that goes beyond political lines and requires a coordinated national response.
Te Pāti Māori argues that moving away from fossil fuels is essential in a world where resource competition and global tensions continue to drive instability, and says Aotearoa must act now to secure its own energy future.
