#hauora: NEW MANUKAU REHAB CENTRE SET TO BOOST CARE FOR SPINAL PATIENTS
A new rehabilitation facility in South Auckland is set to strengthen care for people living with spinal injuries, with upgrades at Middlemore Hospital aimed at improving treatment and recovery outcomes.
The refurbishment of the hospital’s adult rehabilitation ward will support a dedicated 28-bed unit providing both general and neurological rehabilitation services.
The development is part of Health New Zealand’s wider programme to upgrade ageing infrastructure and ensure facilities remain safe and fit for purpose for patients requiring specialist care.
Spinal injuries are often life-changing, requiring long-term, coordinated rehabilitation support. The upgraded unit is expected to improve access to services for patients across the upper North Island, where demand continues to grow.
South Auckland already plays a key role in spinal rehabilitation, with specialist services based in the region supporting patients from a wide catchment area.
The new centre will help bring services together, allowing for more integrated care across disciplines including physical therapy, neurological rehabilitation and ongoing recovery support.
Health officials say modern, purpose-built facilities are essential to helping patients regain independence and improve quality of life following serious injury.
The investment also reflects increasing pressure on the health system, particularly in fast-growing communities like Counties Manukau, where population growth continues to drive demand for services.
The upgraded unit is expected to provide more consistent and coordinated care, supporting both patients and their whānau through the rehabilitation journey.
