#regional: SLIPS SHUT KEY EAST COAST ROUTE AS WAIOEKA GORGE CUT OFF AGAIN
State Highway 2 through the Waioeka Gorge has been blocked after fresh slips brought down debris across the road, cutting a vital link between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne.
The latest closure follows unstable conditions in the steep gorge, where recent weather has loosened soil and rock, causing material to fall onto the highway and halt traffic in both directions.
The route is a critical connection between the Bay of Plenty and Tairāwhiti, and disruptions have immediate impacts on freight, local communities and travellers moving between the regions.
Authorities have moved quickly to assess the site and begin clearing operations, but ongoing instability means the road cannot safely reopen until the risk of further slips is reduced. Motorists are being warned to expect delays and consider alternative routes where possible.
The Waioeka Gorge has a long history of closures due to slips and rockfalls, with its rugged terrain and weather-prone conditions making it one of the more vulnerable stretches of highway in the country.
Earlier severe weather events in the region have already caused widespread damage, with dozens of slips recorded along the corridor and major disruptions lasting weeks in some cases.
With more unsettled weather forecast, officials are continuing to monitor the gorge closely as crews work to restore access on the key state highway.
