#national: Public urged to take extra care as firefighter strike action continues
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is warning the public to be extra cautious as ongoing strike action by career firefighters continues to impact services across the country.
The industrial action, led by members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union, involves rolling one-hour stoppages, with crews stepping away from duties during set periods as negotiations over pay and conditions remain unresolved.
During these strike windows, Fire and Emergency says it will continue to respond to life-threatening emergencies, but some lower-priority incidents may not receive a response or could face delays. These include automatic fire alarms with no sign of fire, small outdoor blazes, and non-urgent assistance calls.
Officials say contingency plans are in place, with volunteer firefighters helping to maintain coverage, but acknowledge response times in some areas may be slower than usual.
The warning comes as repeated strike actions continue nationwide, with thousands of firefighters participating as part of a prolonged dispute over staffing levels, resources and pay.
Fire and Emergency is urging households and businesses to reduce their risk by taking simple precautions, including checking smoke alarms, avoiding unnecessary fires, and ensuring escape plans are in place.
Communities are also being reminded to remain vigilant, particularly during the strike periods, and to only call 111 in genuine emergencies.
Authorities say while essential services remain operational, the reduced capacity means the public plays a critical role in preventing avoidable incidents.
When crews step back, the responsibility steps forward.
Fire and Emergency says cooperation from the public will help ensure limited resources are focused where they are needed most while industrial action continues.
