#national: DIRTY WATER WARNING AS REPORT REVEALS WORSENING FRESHWATER CRISIS
A new Government report has revealed the quality and safety of New Zealand’s freshwater is worsening, with growing risks to both human health and the environment.
The Ministry for the Environment’s latest findings show widespread contamination across groundwater and rivers, with nearly half of monitored groundwater sites recording unsafe levels of E. coli at least once between 2019 and 2024.
Nitrate contamination is also a concern, with more than one in ten groundwater sites exceeding legal limits for drinking water over the same period.
Rivers are also under pressure, with modelling estimating that almost half of the country’s total river length was unsuitable for activities like swimming between 2020 and 2024.
The report adds to mounting concern about the state of freshwater in Aotearoa, with environmental groups warning the situation has reached crisis point.
Greenpeace says the findings confirm long-standing concerns about unsafe drinking water in rural communities, alongside lakes affected by toxic algal blooms and rivers no longer safe for recreation.
The report identifies agriculture, particularly intensive dairy farming, as a major driver of pollution, with runoff and land use pressures contributing to declining water quality.
Concerns are also being raised about the scale of dairy expansion, with warnings that continued growth in herd numbers could further strain waterways and increase contamination risks.
Environmental advocates are calling for urgent action, including reducing herd sizes and shifting toward more sustainable farming practices to protect waterways and public health.
The findings reinforce calls for stronger regulation and faster intervention, as pressure grows on the Government to address what is increasingly being described as a nationwide freshwater crisis.
