#weather: Cyclone Vaianu Looms as Threat to North Island with Damaging Winds and Heavy Rain
A powerful tropical system tracking south from Fiji is raising alarm in Aotearoa, with forecasters warning Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu could bring dangerous weather conditions to parts of the North Island this weekend.
Currently a category three cyclone moving south of Fiji, Vaianu is already delivering heavy rain across the Pacific and is expected to shift toward New Zealand in the coming days.
MetService has issued an early Severe Weather Watch for Sunday, signalling the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain and hazardous coastal conditions if the system tracks across the North Island as forecast.
Forecasters say the cyclone could bring life-threatening winds, though uncertainty remains around its exact path. The areas most at risk will depend on how the system moves over the next few days, with updates expected as confidence in the forecast improves.
The early warning has been issued well ahead of the usual timeframe, reflecting the potential severity of the system. Officials say watches are typically released one to three days before an event, but the extended lead time highlights the need for early preparation.
Heavy rain is also expected to accompany the system, with further watches and warnings likely to be issued as early as Thursday. There is a strong likelihood that some of these could be upgraded as the situation develops.
Meteorologists are working closely with Pacific counterparts and will take over official forecasting responsibilities for the system as it moves further south into New Zealand’s area.
Authorities are urging people to stay informed and begin preparing now, with several days still available to get ready for possible severe weather impacts.
Residents are being encouraged to monitor updates, secure outdoor items, and ensure emergency plans are in place ahead of the weekend, as the country braces for what could become a significant weather event.
