#regional: All Clear for Auckland as Boil Water Notice Lifted After E. coli Scare
Residents in parts of central Auckland have been given the all clear after a precautionary boil water notice was lifted, following days of testing linked to an E. coli detection.
The notice had been in place for areas including Hillsborough, Mt Roskill, Royal Oak and Three Kings after a routine sample earlier this week detected the presence of bacteria in the water supply.
Watercare has now confirmed the water is safe to drink after further testing returned clear results, allowing the notice to be removed.
The initial alert was issued as a precaution to protect public health, with authorities moving quickly to isolate the potential source and carry out extensive sampling across the affected and surrounding areas.
Subsequent investigations pointed to a likely issue with a sample tap rather than widespread contamination in the network, with multiple follow-up tests showing no presence of E. coli.
Boil water notices are typically issued when there is a risk that harmful microorganisms may be present in drinking water, even if that risk is low, and remain in place until testing confirms the supply is safe.
During the notice, residents were advised to boil water for drinking, cooking and hygiene as a precaution, while alternative water supplies were made available in the affected suburbs.
The lifting of the notice will come as a relief to households and businesses impacted by the disruption, particularly as the alert had raised concerns about water safety and public health.
Authorities say the situation highlights the importance of rapid response systems and regular testing in maintaining confidence in Auckland’s drinking water supply.
While the issue has now been resolved, officials are continuing to monitor the network to ensure ongoing safety and prevent any recurrence.
